Legacy of Rabbi Lelyveld: The Role of Clergy in the Civil Rights Movement
3:00 PM - 4:00 PM
The special exhibition gallery features an iconic image of Rabbi Arthur Lelyveld, after he was beaten with tire irons by white segregationists in 1964, while helping to register black voters in Mississippi. He would later become head of Cleveland’s Fairmount Temple at the time when it was considered one of the nation’s largest reform congregations. His local, and national legacy was centered on social activism that included fostering closer relations between Blacks and Jews. Join moderator Dr. Sean Martin of Western Reserve Historical Society in conversation with Rabbi Joshua Caruso of Fairmount Temple and Minister Jeremy Prim of Philemon Community Baptist Church, to explore the role of clergy in the civil rights movement of the 1960s and how Black and Jewish communities work together today.
