Monthly walking events encourage families to pursue healthy lifestyles together.

The Cleveland Heights-University Heights PTA, in partnership with State Farm Insurance and the American Heart Association, announces “Walk The Block,” a new program to address childhood obesity, increase awareness for health and wellness, and encourage families to get fit together.

Approximately 20 percent of children nationwide are obese,” said Sabrina Humphries, program coordinator. “By holding these monthly ‘Walk the Block’ events, we hope to do our part to support healthy families and encourage them to pursue active lifestyles together.” The National Parent Teachers Association awarded the CH-UH PTA a grant to fund “Walk the Block.” Families may also participate in dancing and Zumba activities at each walk.

The first “Walk the Block” event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 25, and three additional walks are scheduled for spring:

• Feb. 25, 10 a.m. at Heights High School;

• March 24, 10 a.m. at Richmond Towne Centre;

• April 28, 10 a.m. (location to be announced);

• May 12, 10 a.m. at Cleveland Heights High School cafeteria. This is a special Mother’s Day Walk. Participants are encouraged to wear red in support of combating childhood obesity.
