During his State of the Schools presentation on Jan. 25, Douglas Heuer, Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District Superintendent, highlighted ways in which the district has been working to accomplish its vision of P.A.S.S.A.G.E., Preparing All Students for Success in A Global Economy.

Heuer noted that the district is close to receiving not just an Effective, but an Excellent state report card ranking for 2012. He talked about how the district’s Pathways of Choice educational program is the best vehicle to motivate and inspire students to succeed at the new and rigorous world-class core curriculum that the state of Ohio has adopted. Heuer believes that by providing students with meaningful choice, and by appealing to different learning styles, students will embrace learning for life. He also explained the need for renovated and more innovative facilities, and how they need to inspire, not inhibit, students from achieving their goals.

Before Heuer’s speech, the Heights High Brass Quintet entertained the audience with a performance that featured Cassie Espenschied and Ann Zicari on trumpets, Lillie Hall on horn, Jarrod Robinson on trombone, and Oleaser Johnson on tuba. Members of the Noble Elementary Select Choir also performed, and showed their Tiger spirit with a song they wrote the lyrics for, “I am a Tiger,” set to the music of “Eye of the Tiger.”

In concluding his address, Heuer said, “We have almost 6,000 points of pride in our schools at this moment. They are our students.” He then introduced four Heights High seniors who have made a difference not only in their school community, but in the CH-UH community as well. They are Stedman Smith, REAL School; Ellie Austin, Legacy School; Leondra Taylor, Mosaic School; and Ariel Travis, Renaissance School.
