Dobama presents Playwrights' GYM

Playwrights’ GYM, a program offered to local playwrights by Dobama Theatre, announces a series of workshops and full-length productions. The GYM comprises two parts—GYMworks, in its second year; and GYMrep, in its inaugural season. The goal of Playwrights’ GYM goal is to nurture new work in a safe environment, and to develop plays for future production at Dobama Theatre.

Providing playwrights with the opportunity to try out new works and to collaborate with a director, GYMworks will present scenes and new short works by Larry Nehring, Faye Sholiton, Christopher Johnston, Cornell Hubert Calhoun III, and Deborah Magid.

GYMworks dates and times are:
Fridays, Jan. 6 and 13 at 8 p.m.
Saturdays, Jan. 7 and 14 at 8 p.m.
Sundays, Jan 8 and 15 at 2:30 p.m.

GYMrep will showcase two new full-length productions in repertory: “Telling Lies” by Faye Sholiton and “The Mighty Scarabs” by Cornell Calhoun. In “Telling Lies” an elderly mother asks her grown daughter to edit her newly written autobiography. The daughter responds by attempting to edit her mother’s life. The granddaughter has her own take on the family history. Over the course of a weekend, the three women discover the truth about memory and its fallibility.

Twenty years have passed since the East Tech High School basketball team captured the state championship, a source of pride for the community. But did that one shining moment ultimately contribute to the team’s demise?

GYMrep dates and times are:
Tuesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. “Telling Lies” (TL)
