Heights High Achievement Scholars

Abria Marshall and Geoffrey Golden are the Heights High National Achievement Scholar Semifinalists.

Cleveland Heights High School seniors Abria Marshall and Geoffrey Golden have been named semifinalists in the National Achievement Scholarship Program. Semifinalists will compete to qualify as one of 1,300 National Achievement Finalists. Next spring, approximately 800 finalists will be selected to receive more than $2.4 million in National Achievement Scholarships.

Remembering grandma’s words

Marshall remembers her grandmother telling her to work hard in school so she could get a good job. “She worked so hard, I want to honor her,” said Marshall. Doing well in school has been an important ethic for her and her family for as long as she can remember. She skipped fourth grade at Boulevard Elementary and has always been an ardent reader. It was hard for her to pick a favorite subject.

“Calculus is really exciting, but I like the applied math in physics. The chemistry in psych is fascinating and I like AP literature,” she said. She is part of the Link Crew leadership team and plays on the lacrosse and tennis teams. Abria is applying to Miami University, Hampton University and Bowling Green State University and is considering a major in engineering.

Appreciating the opportunities

Golden attends Cleveland State University in the morning and takes classes at Heights High in the afternoon. He has served in student government since he was in third grade and is a student conductor in the A Capella Choir and Gospel Choir.

“There are so many opportunities at this school,” he said. His two main academic interests are economics and music. He took AP economics last year at Heights High that prepared him for his economics class this year at CSU. While he loves the college atmosphere, he notes the difference between college and high school teachers. “Several of my teachers here are really engaging and they push us to be successful,” he said.

Golden plans to study economics and music composition. He has applied to several schools including Ohio State University and Howard University.
