Heights High club tackles adolescent obesity

Parents and students have fun while exercising and learning together.

No doubt you’ve heard statements like these: "Kids don’t get enough exercise" and "Teenagers spend most of their free time on the couch or on the computer while eating junk food." Unfortunately, they are all too true! Childhood and teen obesity is on the rise across the nation. Developing healthy lifestyles has become a major initiative of the national Parent Teacher Association and First Lady Michelle Obama.

This year, Leading Ladies, a leadership and service club at Cleveland Heights High School, will collaborate with the middle school Leading Ladies units and the CH-UH Parent Teacher Association council to bring to the community the 3rd annual Healthy Lifestyles Mind, Body & Soul Wellness Challenge.

"Community service is one of the primary focuses of Leading Ladies," states Leading Ladies founder, Sabrina Humphries, and this event fits in with the group’s mission.

The plan is utilize community resources to engage adolescent students and their families in interactive activities designed to help them become informed consumers who make wise nutritional and lifestyle choices.

The wellness challenge will include fitness contests, such as jumping rope, boxing and basketball, as well as healthy foods tastings, nutritional presentations, blood pressure screenings, karate demonstrations, massage therapy, personal style and grooming, raffles and line-dancing.

The Healthy Lifestyles Mind, Body & Soul Wellness event will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2010, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Heights High.

The challenge is open to middle school and high school students and adult residents of Cleveland Heights and University Heights. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.

To ensure the success of the event, Leading Ladies is asking for contributions of money, healthy foods and raffle items. If you are a health professional or a provider of wellness services, please consider participating in the Healthy Lifestyles Mind, Body & Soul Wellness Challenge.
