St. Paul's Youth Drama Dreamers take on Jesus Christ Superstar! Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics by Tim Rice. The musical is sung-through, with no spoken dialogue. The story is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. It highlights political and interpersonal struggles between Judas Iscariot and Jesus that are not in the Bible narratives.

Tickets are $8/per person. All proceeds go to the Youth Stewardship Fund which goes to help support many different activities and charities. click the more information link below to purchase tickets

Heights Youth Theatre presents West Side Story
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM
For most people, the first things that come to mind when thinking of West Side Story are the dancing and the songs. First performed in 1957, West Side Story broke many of Broadway’s expectations and rules about what could be portrayed on the stage. There was a palpable shift from musical comedy to musical theater. Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, the new musical blurred the lines between opera and pop, and reflected on the stage, one of the gang and ethnic conflicts of its time. Unfortunately, we still live in a society that tends to fear difference. At the center of it all is the ability to highlight the views, hopes and fears of teens! Conceived by Jerome Robbins, West Side Story had more dancing than any other musical before it. Add to that, the considerable talents of Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim on music and Arthur Laurents on script. Yet, those in power at the time said that it could never happen. It was too dark, too tragic, too timely, too hard. This is far from High School Musical! We look forward to sharing our version of West Side Story!

PLAYWRIGHTS LOCAL 4181 ANNOUNCES 2016 PLAY LAB & SPRING WORKSHOPS
7:30 PM
New plays and free workshops presented April 15-17, 2016, at Waterloo Arts

Cleveland, OH; March 14, 2016

Playwrights Local 4181 announces its 2016 Play Lab and Spring Workshops, a series of new plays and writing classes from April 15-17 at Waterloo Arts. This event features staged readings of works from the company’s Play Lab program, which teams playwrights, dramaturgs, and directors for three months of in-depth development. It also includes additional readings of shorter plays, a Saturday morning class for kids, audience talkbacks, and a Friday evening reception. All sessions are free, with a suggested donation of $8.

The 2016 Play Lab and Spring Workshops will be held at Creative Space at Waterloo Arts, in North Collinwood. (397 E. 156th Street, Cleveland, Ohio 44110). Information on festival sessions and registration is available at Playwrights Local 4181’s website.

“The Play Lab provides an essential outlet for developing playwright-generated projects, as opposed to devised pieces, revivals, commissions, and other types of work,” notes David Todd, Artistic Director of Playwrights Local 4181. “It also capitalizes on the strengths of our staff, which are rooted in teaching playwriting and developing new works. This type of intensive feedback and revising process is highly valuable to playwrights looking to improve their work.”

The writers of the Play Lab’s featured full-length works are Nivi Engineer, Claire Robinson May, and Amy Schwabauer. Additional playwrights contributing shorter pieces include J C Cifranic, Dan Riordan, Rachel Baird Rudisill, Greg A. Smith, Jeremy Stemen, and Mary E. Weems, Ph.D.

Among the other highlights of this weekend-long event is Playwrights Local’s first class for kids, taught by Elana Averbach. Additional sessions include a seminar on dramaturgy with Arwen Mitchell and a playwriting workshop with Jennifer Schlueter, Associate Professor of Theater at The Ohio State University and the company’s first out-of-town guest.

Playwrights Local 4181 is a recently formed theater company located in Cleveland. Billed as a playwrights’ center, the organization’s goal is to provide a home base for novice and experienced dramatic writers in Northeast Ohio. They offer classes and workshops, produce original plays, provide professional development opportunities, and engage the community through site-specific projects. Tax-deductible contributions to this 501(c)(3) group can be made at http://playwrightslocal.org/donate/.
