Community as a Form of Art through Language
Free sharing of Ohio Arts Council Fairfax Residency
open to the public

Dayton artist Jean Howat Berry is an Ohio Arts Council Artist-in-Residence with third graders at Fairfax Elementary School in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, for the month of May. Berry, a theater artist, will focus on Community as a Form of Art through Language and spend one period a day with each third grade class for the month. Lauren Epstein’s class will work on writing and performing; Stacey Cohen’s on movement, and Kelly Borally’s on mask-making.

Ms. Berry will also interact with other classes in the school through the classes of art teacher Joan Levin, physical education teacher Ilene Nolish, and vocal instructor Tamar Grey.

Come see the culmination of the residency with music, skits, and art!

The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this residency with state tax dollars to encourage educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans. Through Arts Learning program residencies, professional artists are placed in schools and other non-profit organizations for periods ranging from two weeks to two years. The program support experiences that: value the creative process; provide opportunities for in-depth collaborative learning; honor the artist’s work, vision and traditions; strive for high artistic standards; and respect and develop participant’s artistic perspectives.

The Fairfax residency is made possible through the assistance of Heights Arts, a nonprofit community arts organization. For more information please call Peggy Spaeth, Director, at 216.371.3457.
