Organ Spectacular-A day to get to know the King of Instruments
Organ Spectacular is a day for organists and organ enthusiasts around the world to celebrate the King of Instruments and to provide an introduction to those who might never have heard an organ. See
Schedule of Events
It is one of many events during the American Guild of Organists [AGO] sponsored International Year of the Organ which runs from June, 2008 to June, 2009. To date there are approximately 300 Organ Spectacular events recorded at AGO headquarters that will take place in nine countries around the world on October 19.
The Cleveland event will feature demonstrations of St. Paul’s three pipe organs with performances by several organists throughout the day. There will be pieces for solo organ and organ with instruments and voice. One piece will be an improvisation with a recorded track of music by an Icelandic rock group.
Multi-media exhibits will show how organs are built, highlight careers of several organists, and show that the pipe organ can be a work of art. Our local organ builder, Chris Holtkamp, will also have a display.
We are pleased to report that two of Cleveland’s three new international artists will be taking part in the event.
Dr. Horst Buchholz is the new Music Director at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, Cleveland. He is a native of Germany, but comes to us from Denver.
Dr. Jonathan Moyer, Director of Music at Church of the Covenant, University Circle, received his DMA from the Peabody Conservatory in Baltimore this summer and just last weekend won Second Place in the Tokyo International Organ competition.
Other artists include
Nicole Keller, Professor at Baldwin-Wallace Conservatory and a national artist,
Linda Gardner, Church of the Ascension, Lakewood, and
Karel Paukert, St. Paul’s Cleveland, Heights and retired Curator of Musical Instruments at the Cleveland Museum of Art.
The variety of music and the exhibits will allow visitors to walk away with a new appreciation of the organ as a musical instrument.
The event is designed to be a truly community event for the first three hours. Only the final hour will have a religious component.
